State of Games in the Cosmere Panel: Gen Con 2026
A quick recap on everything discussed during the state of games in the cosmere panel at gen con 2026
Each year at Gen Con, the Brotherwise and Dragonsteel teams get together to share the most exciting things happening for tabletop games in the Cosmere. This year’s panel was hosted by Johnny O’Neal with John D Clair, Hayden Dillard, Lyla Fujiwara, Dan Wells, Meric Moir, and Lydia Suen as guests.
The panel started with a recap on 2025; The Cosmere RPG debuted with the Stormlight Campaign Setting in the Fall of 2025 and landed as the #2 top-selling RPG according to ICv2. The RPG continued to be in the top 10 RPGs as we went into the Spring of 2026, which started off a great year of gaming in the Cosmere.
Shards of Creation released in late June, and quickly sold out ahead of Gen Con. We’re currently on our third printing of the game and it hasn’t even been out for 2 months yet! Shards of Creation is our most easy-to-learn game yet. If you've played any classic card game like Hearts or Euchre, then this game will be easy for you to pick up! Paired with gorgeous art nouveau-style illustrations from Medusa Dollmaker, Shards of Creation is the perfect game to introduce your friends and family to the Cosmere.
After talking about Shards of Creation, we turned our focus to Mistborn. This year, we’ll be celebrating the 20th Anniversary of Mistborn with two new releases in our gaming line! Mistborn: The Well of Acension, the first shuffle-in expansion for Mistborn: The Deckbuilding Game, is expected to release this November. Mistborn continues to be a top-seller for us with over 100,000 copies sold since we released the game in November 2024, so we are excited to continue support for the game! The Well of Ascension introduces four new hero cards, new dual-metal cards, and a new solo/co-op mode based on the Siege of Luthadel!
In addition to the deckbuilding game, we are releasing the Mistborn Campaign Setting for the Cosmere RPG this November! Fulfillment for Wave 2 of the Kickstarter is expected to start in September, with the digital release for backers hitting on Wednesday, September 2nd. The digital release for the public will be a week later on September 10th.
During the panel we talked quite a lot about Mistborn Legacy, the first campaign-length adventure for the Mistborn Campaign Setting! During the panel, Dan Wells talked about how he proposed the idea of legacies, special roles that give each member of the party unique character moments and connections between the two eras. We’re pretty proud of Legacy, and can’t wait for you all to play it soon!
The Stormlight Campaign Setting in the Cosmere RPG continues to see strong support from the RPG team with new releases and upcoming content. We released Law and Obligation during Free RPG Day this Summer, and Chasmfiend Volume 3 made its debut at Gen Con! Both are now available for purchase on DriveThruRPG.
But that’s not all for Stormlight! We’re thrilled to announce the follow up to Stonewalkers, the first Stormlight campaign-length adventure for levels 1-7 that released in 2025. Tidebreakers is the next campaign-length adventure for levels 10-16 in the Stormlight Campaign Setting! Players get to partake in naval and jungle warfare in the Reshi Isles during the events of Oathbringer, Rhythm of War, and Wind and Truth. But we don’t want to spoil too much! Tidebreakers is expected to release at retail in October 2027, and we’ll share more information as we complete playtesting over the next several months.
You also may be thinking to yourself, “How is Tidebreakers the follow-up to Stonewalkers if there are a few levels missing in between adventures?” During the panel, the team promised that was by design. You can have your PCs go on a homebrew adventure in between campaigns, have them level up “offscreen,” OR you can play Showdown in Shadesmar. For those that don’t remember, Showdown in Shadesmar was a digital stretch goal unlocked during the Cosmere RPG Kickstarter Campaign. Kickstarter backers will receive Showdown in Shadesmar for free in 2027, ahead of Tidebreakers.
Cosmere RPG players can also expect three new adventures in the first half of 2027: a new retail kit adventure, a new Free RPG day adventure, and Heroes of the Lost Desolation. Set during one of the ancient Desolations, this was a hit as the 400-player game for Dragonsteel Nexus 2025 — check out WeGeekTogether’s video on it! Now we’re scaling it down to fit a normal RPG table.
After we talked about everything new for Stormlight coming out next year, we teased the Cosmere Solo Handbook getting developed by Shawn Tomkin and Matt Click (Ironsworn, The One Ring, Dragonbane)! The Solo Handbook is a new rulebook meant for solo play only, and has notes and art by Marie Seeberger from a Worldhopper named Dulac throughout the book. We’re thrilled to announce that this is releasing in August 2027!
While we had a lot to share about the Cosmere RPG, we couldn’t wait to share details on the next big thing in Cosmere gaming. And we aren’t kidding when we say BIG. Stormlight: War for Roshar is the next Cosmere Kickstarter launching on October 13th! This is an epic strategy war game that pits the Coalition of Honor against the forces of Odium. You can learn more about War for Roshar in this IGN Exclusive article! While we were at Gen Con, we got to show off War for Roshar to a few other gaming outlets, including Gaming Trend. The folks at Gaming Trend awarded War for Roshar with a “Best of Gen Con 2026” award after we showed them how the game works! Here’s designer John D Clair with that award and a prototype of the game.
During the War for Roshar Kickstarter campaign, we’ll also offer new Stormlight Premium Miniatures and the first-ever Mistborn Premium Miniatures set as add-ons! You definitely won’t want to miss out on this Kickstarter! We’ll have more details about War for Roshar and the miniatures leading up to October 13th, but for now, enjoy this teaser showcasing new art from the game:
And last, but definitely not least, we shared upcoming news about the underlying system for the Cosmere RPG, Plotweaver. Plotweaver combines rich mechanics with a narrative-first philosophy, telling stories of heroic action in which characters grow and advance over the course of epic fantasy and sci-fi campaigns. Plotweaver is a fully open system that invites you to build your own worlds, settings, and mechanics. Publish original content with no restrictions, or expand the Tapestry of official Plotweaver worlds.
Not only are we starting 2027 with many Plotweaver partnerships and activations, but we’ve been posting on our Patreon, Plotweaver Academy, with design guidance and sneak peeks of what’s to come! We want to get you prepared to design in Plotweaver because we want this to be the Designer’s RPG System. And if you’re wanting to dip your toes into the world of Plotweaver before designing on your own, we started our Open Alpha! Join the Plotweaver RPG Discord Server to start playtesting today.
That’s it for the State of Games in the Cosmere Panel at Gen Con this year! Stay tuned for the annual State of Games in the Cosmere Panel at Dragonsteel Nexus this Winter!
